Advisory committee on the establishment of the National North Korean Human Rights Center discusses the construction and operation of the center

Unification Ministry launches the advisory committee on the establishment of the National North Korean Human Rights Center and holds its first meeting (April 18)

On April 18, the Ministry of Unification, led by Minister Kim Yung Ho, appointed members for the advisory committee on the establishment of the National North Korean Human Rights Center and convened its first plenary meeting.

The advisory committee consists of 14 civilian experts, including Chairperson Jo Nam Seung, who advise on the construction and operation of the center. They are expected to perform roles such as providing tailored advice on architectural design, exhibition content management, and space organization.

During his remarks, Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho cited the statement by President Yoon on the 105th March First Independence Movement Day that “unification is precisely what is needed to expand the universal values of freedom and human rights,” and expressed his plan to foster the National North Korean Human Rights Center as a core hub to “spread the realities of North Korea.”

Furthermore, Minister Kim stressed that he will turn the center into a venue for public discussion on various global human rights issues by holding joint events and exhibitions and human rights dialogues with the international community.

Additionally, Minister Kim personally penned a message of hope to North Korean residents in a work donated by a web-cartoonist Choi Sung Kook, who is also a North Korean defector, to commemorate the launch of the advisory committee on the establishment of the National North Korean Human Rights Center, and asked the members to play constructive and creative roles in all stages of the center’s construction and operation.
