The international community must take responsibility and stand in solidarity for the improvement of human rights in North Korea

Unification Ministry hosts the 2023 International Dialogue on North Korean Human Rights (December 18)

On December 18, the Ministry of Unification hosted the 2023 International Dialogue on North Korean Human Rights under the theme of “Challenges for the International Community for Improving Human Rights in North Korea.”

Prominent domestic and international experts attended the event, and they reflected on the significance of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and discussed ways to improve North Korean human rights in depth.

The event consisted of two sessions: “The 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Shedding New Light on North Korean Human Rights and Democracy Globally” and “Protection of Human Rights for Overseas North Korean Defectors: International Perspectives and Strategies.” Special remarks by Michael Brack, a former inmate of a former East Germany prison camp, also featured and drew notable attention.

Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho highlighted that although human rights violations in North Korea persist, “the North will have no choice but to change if the international community calls for improvement with one voice.” Minister Kim expressed his commitment to continue exerting efforts in bolstering cooperation with the international community and civil society to improve human rights in North Korea next year.
