Minister Kim Yung Ho delivers congratulatory remarks at an international symposium to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UN COI on Human Rights in North Korea (September 14)
On September 14, Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho delivered a congratulatory message at an international symposium to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Human Rights in North Korea. In his speech, he evaluated that it was in the aftermath of the Report of the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea being published in 2014 that efforts to improve the human rights situation in North Korea began to emerge among the international community.
Minister Kim expressed regret, saying, “We also enacted the North Korean Human Rights Act in 2016 in line with this trend, but the act has not been properly enforced as the North Korean Human Rights Foundation has yet to be established.”
The minister repeatedly called on the National Assembly to cooperate in the establishment of the North Korean Human Rights Foundation and stressed that “if the government, private sector, and international human rights organizations work together in a strong partnership, we can develop effective measures to promote North Korean human rights.”
