Unification Ministry holds an appointment ceremony and a briefing session for the Special Economic Zone for Peace (December 13)
On December 13, the Ministry of Unification held an appointment ceremony and a briefing session for the Special Economic Zone for Peace to pursue the Special Economic Zone for Peace through public-private cooperation.
The Special Economic Zone for Peace Committee* is expected to deliberate and decide on key matters related to the Special Economic Zone for Peace, including the establishment of a master plan for the zone and its designation.
*The Committee is chaired by the Minister of Unification, with the Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as vice-chair. It consists of ex-officio members (the vice ministers of 13 government ministries) and up to 10 appointed members. The appointed members, individuals who do not serve as civil servants but possess extensive knowledge and experience and can contribute to the development and operation of the Special Economic Zone for Peace, are appointed by the chairperson (ACT ON THE SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE FOR PEACE Article 31 (6)).
The event featured a ceremony for awarding appointment letters to committee members, an opening speech by Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho, and a presentation of research results on the “Master Plan for the Special Economic Zone for Peace” by the Korea Research
Institute for Human Settlements. Officials from three metropolitan cities, twelve local governments, and the National Assembly joined the event and gathered various opinions on the establishment and promotion of the zone.
In his opening speech, Minister Kim stated, “The Special Economic Zone for Peace will contribute to preparing for unification and support the development of border areas that have been constrained by military and security situations, thereby promoting both balanced national development and the growth of domestic industries.”
Moreover, the minister emphasized that close cooperation with local governments and relevant agencies is required for the successful implementation of the Special Economic Zone for Peace.
