Q. Regarding Kim Il Sung’s birthday, North Korean state media has mentioned the “Day of the Sun” more frequently this year compare to last year. How does the Unification Ministry interpret this situation?

A. In April last year, the North used the expressiσn “Day of the Sun” only once. This year, the expressiσn has appeared six times in April alone. The North has consistently used the term “Day of the Sun” until a sudden decline was observed last year. The drop in number was perceived as efforts to remove traces of predecessors or to solidify Kim Jong Un as an independent leader. However, the slight increase this year appears to reflect the North’s intent to flexibly manage the situation while considering public receptiveness.
