On May 3, Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho met with Parliamentary State Secretary for East Germany and Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany Carsten Schneider to listen to Germany’s experiences with unification and exchange views on the unification issues on the Korean Peninsula.
Minister Kim expressed gratitude for his role as German Chairman of the Korea-Germany Unification Advisory Committee and support for the Korean government’s unification and North Korea policies. The minister also stated that, drawing from Germany’s experience and lessons in unification, the government will steadfastly pursue “peaceful unification based on the liberal democratic order,” while urging for cooperation and support from the German side.
In response, State Secretary Schneider stressed the solidarity between South Korea and Germany towards a unified Korean Peninsula and resonated with our vision for a free unification.
Additionally, both sides agreed on the importance of supporting the settlement of North Korean defectors in the context of post-unification social integration and pledged to cooperate for the improvement of the human rights of North Korean residents based on universal values.
